Simulating Supersonic Turbulence in Magnetized Molecular Clouds

چکیده
We present results of large-scale three-dimensional simulations of weakly magnetized supersonic turbulence at grid resolutions up to 1024 cells. Our numerical experiments are carried out with the Piecewise Parabolic Method on a Local Stencil and assume an isothermal equation of state. The turbulence is driven by a large-scale isotropic solenoidal force in a periodic computational domain and fully develops in a few flow crossing times. We then evolve the flow for a number of flow crossing times and analyze various statistical properties of the saturated turbulent state. We show that the energy transfer rate in the inertial range of scales is surprisingly close to a constant, indicating that Kolmogorov’s phenomenology for incompressible turbulence can be extended to magnetized supersonic flows. We also discuss numerical dissipation effects and convergence of different turbulence diagnostics as grid resolution refines from 256 to 1024 cells.

Decay Timescales of MHD Turbulence inMolecular
We compute 3D models of supersonic, sub-Alfv enic, and super-Alfv enic decaying turbulence, with initial rms Alfv en and Mach numbers ranging up to ve, and an isothermal equation of state appropriate for star-forming interstellar clouds of molecular gas. We nd that in 3D the kinetic energy decays as t ? , with 0:85 < < 1:2. In 1D magnetized turbulence actually decays faster than unmagnetized tu...

We investigate numerically the combined effects of supersonic turbulence, strong magnetic fields and ambipolar diffusion on cloud evolution leading to star formation. We find that, in clouds that are initially magnetically subcritical, supersonic turbulence can speed up star formation, through enhanced ambipolar diffusion in shocks. The speedup overcomes a major objection to the standard scenar...

We present numerical studies of compressible, decaying turbulence, with and without magnetic fields, with initial rms Alfvén and Mach numbers ranging up to five, and apply the results to the question of the support of star-forming interstellar clouds of molecular gas. We find that, in 1D, magnetized turbulence actually decays faster than unmagnetized turbulence. In all the regimes that we have ...

This review summarizes the argument for molecular clouds being dominated by turbulence, most likely super-Alfvénic turbulence. Five lines of observational evidence are given: molecular linewidths and line shapes, nonequilibrium chemical abundances, fractal cloud shapes, measurements of the dispersion of dust extinction through clouds, and Zeeman measurements of the field strength. Recent models...
متن کاملPiecewise parabolic method on a local stencil for magnetized supersonic turbulence simulation
Stable, accurate, divergence-free simulation of magnetized supersonic turbulence is a severe test of numerical MHD schemes and has been surprisingly difficult to achieve due to the range of flow conditions present. Here we present a new, higher order-accurate, low dissipation numerical method which requires no additional dissipation or local ”fixes” for stable execution. We describe PPML, a loc...
